More Cyber?

I know, more cyber, less outerspace, but before I share some things I know about the net let's have another look at space. I saw this guy in the southeast about 90 degrees above the horizon - maybe 80. I've always wanted to be able to recognize celestial objects, but as of today, right now, I can't really pick anything out other than the moon. May this mark the official beginning of my life as an ameteur astronomer! Anyone have a clue what this might be? Oops, I don't have comments enabled yet.
Before becoming an ameteur astronomer, I had always wanted to go up to Alaska to witness the Aurora Borealis. It's exactly 1 lonely degree here in Chicago, -15°f with the wind chill. It sure feels like I should be able to see the Aurora Borealis from my doorstep.
Thanks for Coming Here

Thanks for coming to this website. I hope you'll let me create something for you, or tell someone that you know of someone else that can create something for them.
View of Outerspace from Chicago, IL

Good Morning. This is my first post. Now that I've got you here on my Cyber Spaceflight website, you're probably wondering what outerspace looks like from just outside of my Chicago home, right? Of course. One of the things I like about taking these outerspace photos is that I only have one or two chances to get a good one because for more than a few reasons, I can't stand outside in the street forever with my digital camera taking pictures of the sky. So check it out, a blurry photo of the moon! A Cyber Spaceflight express delivery to you.

Writing all of that dialogue for the services section of my website really got me in the mood to do some shopping. There are plenty of things I want and need, but for some reason the first place that came to mind was one of my favorite online retailers Little Paper Planes.
After looking through the various limited quantity things that I so have a weakness for, I started wondering why out of all the sites with unique merchandise that I've visited, how did I end up here...again? I've been coming to this site regularly for almost two years now and this wasn't the first time I got a seemingly random urge to see what's going on.
I think to check here when birthdays and holidays come around or when I'm feeling frivolous and just need a new thing. How has this retailer earned such a regular visitor and frequent buyer?
Let us explore.
1. The simple and personal feel of this site makes it a pleasure to click around and look at all of the neat things.
2. It doesn't just "feel" simple and personal. Whenever I put my orders in I get a friendly personal message relaying the status of my purchase and when to expect it. It puts me at ease.
If you're at all able to manage making a personal connection with your visitors, by all means, you must! This is in contrast to shopping online with various other larger retailers, where within moments I'll get an automatically generated notice that my order has been recieved and is being processed. I mean, did a real person really recieve my order and begin processing it? Experience tells me not. On more than a couple of occasions with larger retailers, my order wasn't recieved or processed, it's taken 3 days for someone to respond to my inquiry about my missing package, and for whatever reason my order will be delayed for another few days.
When spending your hard earned money, it's nice to know there's someone on the other end taking care of you.
3. There's a mailing list. Oh God there's a mailing list and that's how I usually end up on this site. I'll get nice little email with a few photos of limited edition prints, handmade accessories and interesting textiles and whatever restraint I was able to exercise pushing this wonderful little store out of sight and mind, this somewhat unexpected informer has arrived reminding me just how much I really deserve another Deth P. Sun print and how I should really start saving up for some originals. Damn that mailing list!
4. Lastly, this store is just easy to use. When I get there, I see what's just come in on the home page. I don't have to look too hard to be reminded of the wonderful little things I can buy - clothing, accessories, art work, papergoods, jewelry, and bags. It's all right there. It's important to keep it simple. Too much information and too many choices and your user will mentally shut down and get out of there faster than you can say "but wait!". No, they have gone, closed the window, turned off the computer, and run away screaming back towards whatever they were supposed to be doing before they got distracted by a little afternoon shopping spree. Even though I'm what I'd consider to be a pretty experienced user, I give up on a site that makes it hard for me to purchase something in a short amount of time. This can be the case for even the most savvy and patient shopper.
So to wrap it up - a few important ingredients for a successful web business:
- Attractive Design
- Personal & Friendly Service
- Effective Marketing - Mailing Lists are Awesome!
- Predictable & Usable Interface
Go forth and conquer!
